Not sure where the year is going but apologies for the lack of updates over the last few months. No doubt you are all enjoying the current good weather and picking all sorts of goodness from your plots. All plot holders should have received a letter from Halton Borough Council this week to inform you that a new lock system will shortly be introduced. Joanna Thornhill who is the new chairperson of Clifton Road Allotment Association has been supplied with keys to issue to plotholders. Joanna will be on site in the community hut on Saturday 26th July between 11.00am to 1.00pm if you are able to collect your new key on that date.
Watch out for more updates soon!
A merry Christmas to all Clifton Road Allotment plot holders and your families and may your plots flourish in 2014!
A big thanks to the group of volunteers who gave up their time only a couple of Saturdays before Christmas (14th December) to form a working party and make a start on the work that needs doing on the community greenhouse. Within a couple of hours the greenhouse had been emptied and tidied up, all unwanted material was loaded on to trailers to head for the tip and damaged panels were removed. There was also time to sup a hot drink, enjoy a hot drink and have a chat. Work will continue on the greenhouse in the new year.
If you have used the community greenhouse in the past or intend to do so in future please consider lending a hand for a couple of hours this coming Saturday 14th December from 10.00am onwards. The plan is to to remove some of the damaged panels, remove rubbish and have a general tidy up. If there is enough interest the allotment association would like to improve facilities over the next year and possibly even have a heating system installed so that you can get your seeds off to an early start. No doubt some of you will be otherwise busy as it’s so close to Christmas, so if you can’t make it but would like to help another date in January will be arranged. You do not have to be a current member of the allotment association to join in the working party. All are welcome!
So that lovely hot summer is finally behind us, the long dark evenings are here and it’s time for a long overdue update of the the website. Watch this space for upcoming news of what’s been happening over the last few months on our allotment site and what’s coming up. If you have any tales to tell of your successes or otherwise this year, photos of your crops or recipes made with your produce please send them in so that we can include them here. You can send any contributions you may have by either by email to email@example.com or pass the information on to any of the committee members.
In the meantime for your information all plot holders should have recently received a letter from Nigel Hayes, Open Spaces Services, Halton Borough Council regarding allotment charges for 2014. Basically the pricing structure has been changed from a full plot/half plot rate to one that utilises a rate/cost per square metre. For the majority of plot holders this means a reduction in their rent! If you have not had a letter yet or have any queries you can contact Nigel on 0303 33 4300.

Clifton Road Allotment Association have been invited to have a plant stall again at this popular local event. We will make a donation to the Millenium Green on the day and the remainder of our profits will go to association funds. If you have any spare plants that you are willing to donate for us to sell on the day please have a word with either Ralph on plot 31/60 or Mary on plot 16.
Nearly a year on since the installation of the toilet and we now have 28 key holders which is great. Hopefully this number will grow. Perhaps this is an opportune time to remind people who use the facility is that is voluntarily maintained by a few members of the association. However all key holders have a responsibility to keep the inside of the building tidy. If you finish a loo roll please take the inner cardboard roll with you to dispose of in your compost bin or back at home.
Graham Evans, MP for Weaver Vale and his son Tom recently made a return visit to Clifton Road Allotments. During his fist visit in April when Graham officially opened our compositing toilet Graham and Tom had a brief look at the bee hives and expressed an interest in seeing them close hand. Heather and Ralph Green arranged to spend an afternoon with them which they appeared to have thoroughly enjoyed. Tom is wearing one of the children’s bee suits which we able to purchase with a grant of £200 last year from Beechwood Community Forum.
The annual general meeting of the allotment association takes place on Saturday 15th June at 2.00pm in the community hut. The meeting is open to all current members and anybody else who wishes to join the association. Membership is £4 a year and you can join at the meeting. We will be looking back at the past year and electing committee members for the forthcoming year. The meeting is your chance to express your views and tell us your suggestions for making improvements that will benefit the site. Please do come along if you can.
On Saturday 15th June plot holder Phil Williams will be giving a talk and practical demonstration on the topic of how to make lovely compost from your green waste. The action kicks off at 1.00pm and will take place at the community hut and on Phil’s plot. The event is open to all plot holders.
